Sunday School Corner - September 2020 Greetings: I am pleased to report that we have had an amazing summer in Sunday School. Initially we focused on the Bible verse taken from Joshua 1 v.9- “The Lord Your God will be with you wherever you go”. This, despite everything that is happening in our children’s world at this time, has been a comfort to them by the knowledge that no matter what happens, they will never be alone. Additionally, for the older children, grade 6 and up, we spent additional time in August delving into the question, “How did we, as black people, get to this moment? We asked and answered this question in our forum in order to put the Black Lives Matter protests, and their continued exposure to racial inequality, into context. Our conversations included but were not limited to the following topics: · The Civil War, · Jim Crow laws, · Important landmark court cases such as: Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown V. Board of Education, and pertinent Amendments. Our children have begun to understand the constant struggles of Black people in America, and their responsibility to be the best person they can be. These conversations led us to Census 2020 and why it behooves everyone - documented or not - to complete the census.
Our last lesson in August was focused on Psalm 100, which, as you know, is a song of praise and thanksgiving. I mention this because we, as a Sunday School, are continually grateful to God for his amazing Grace. We continue to thank him for our children, teachers and the congregation at large, and for giving us a platform through which we can continue to meet and teach about his wondrous love. Now, many of our children are back in school, whether in person, virtually or in a hybrid learning format. We pray that they focus and work diligently ensuring that they do not fall behind academically. We have encouraged all our children to use Sunday School as a resource if they need help. The Sunday School teachers stand ready to try to assist as we can. Please note that on Sunday, September 27th, Youth Sunday, Deacon Cox will be blessing their electronic devices, books, and book bags. Please join us on Zoom. This is an invitation for ALL students, children, and young adults, who do not need to be a part of our Congregation to be included. If you come on-line, please wear a white top.
In closing, I would be remiss if I did not thank all you who have participate in and encourage your children to be present on Sundays. Attendance has exceeded our expectations, especially as we are receiving a steady stream of new children, introduced to the program. An Honorable mention must go to the following students who have never missed or just been absent on one Sunday since April. These are Aubrey Wilson, Brandon, Jada and Brianni Dear, Christian Foster, Conner Jennings, Ezra Payne and, Jacob and Joshua Acevedo. Nuff blessings
